Grooming underground

I thought I had seen it all in terms of make up. This gentleman today was calmly brushing his eyebrows using a mascara. He was brushing away with one hand and holding a mirror with the other, without a care in the world if anyone was watching this unusual sight. Surely he knows that mascara is meant for the lashes and not the brows? Or is it a case of “ignorance is bliss”? Continue reading Grooming underground

Art work

It is summer, and as expected the tattoos are coming out on display. This lady is standing in front of me on the aisle and I can see the designs she has all over her arm going as far as the eye can behold. But that was unlike another design I had seen earlier. A gentleman this time, he had tattooed his face in one black spiderman-like design from his hair line to his neck – no space at all. He was walking with a lady. Now the sight is strange, but what was even stranger was the lady he … Continue reading Art work

Step counter

So, I was climbing up the stairs while transiting in between stations, when I hear this gentleman beside me counting each step as he climbed – 1,2,3….Now I know that I’m not alone in counting steps as I climb, just that I manage to do this in my head and forget how may I counted by the time I get to the top! Do you count as you climb? Or is it just me and said gentleman? Continue reading Step counter

Hiatus, though tales is one

About 2 weeks after the last post on talesoftheunderground, I had a fall and fractured my ankle. I thought the time out was going to give me time to address the publishers comments on the manuscript of the book (of same title). Little did I know that was the beginning of a break (no pun intended) on writing. This time last year when the blog launched, I promised to launch the book by today. Events in the last three months brought a change.  I have since braved the underground on crutches and on one occasion, a hospital given boot. There … Continue reading Hiatus, though tales is one

The Monday after the holiday

It’s my first day back to work after a two week break. The train is crowded (nothing new there…), but there’s this couple standing so close together looking lovingly into each other’s eyes. I suspect that even if the train wasn’t crowded, they’d still be standing that close. So close that the gentleman starts brushing the lady’s eyebrows. Now that’s new, I was expecting some smooching but turns out he wants his lady perfectly groomed! Continue reading The Monday after the holiday

The world is his oyster

Was right behind this gentleman at the ticket barriers and his Oyster card didn’t cause the barriers to open up. He let out very loud and angry hiss at the barriers turning back. As I was right behind him I got on next and could still see the error message it gave him. It read “not enough money” or “please top up your card” or something along those lines – can’t remember the exact phrase. Sorry dear, don’t blame the ticket barriers, they only understand one language and it starts with £! Continue reading The world is his oyster

Macho and all that

After a particularly stressful day at work and towards the end of a stressful week, I’m on my way home at 9.30pm. I see this tall gentleman smartly dressed in a dark brown suit with darker brown shoes to match.  He’s probably 6ft tall and I’m wondering where he’s going at this hour looking like he just stepped out of his dressing room when all I can think of is how I can fast forward in time to crawl into my bed. Only to discover that he is walking a dog. You’d expect a man that tall and all that … Continue reading Macho and all that

Summer is here!

Yesterday was a bank holiday to herald the start of summer. In true form, the weather did not fail to contradict the import of the day. Today though, it finally decided to live up to its name and it’s been a nice warm day. Summer though, does come with its attendant challenges. Fellow commuters, please, please and please try to have a shower any day you are travelling underground. Taking gasps of fresh air when the train doors open at each station is not the best way to start the summer season. What will happen by the time we get … Continue reading Summer is here!
